| Opera Ireland is Ireland's largest and longest established professional opera Company, based in Dublin. Founded in 1941 as the Dublin Grand Opera Society, and re-constituted as Opera Ireland in 1992, the company has now presented almost 400 productions to live audiences of in excess of 1 million, and even larger radio broadcast audiences t through all of that time. In addition to opera productions, Opera Ireland has presented concert opera, operatic concerts and recitals, master-classes, youth opera and opera access programmes. The company has also pioneered live audiovisual relays of its productions in Ireland, and has partnered with the Metropolitan Opera In New York to bring the Met : Live in HD live satellite transmissions to audiences throughout the island of Ireland. The majority of Opera Ireland's productions are main-scale grand opera, presented in the Gaiety Theatre, Dublin. On occasion productions have toured regionally in Ireland and occasionally abroad. A member of Opera Europa, Opera Ireland is also an active co-producer with other European opera companies. Repertoire is a combination of ‘mainstream' operatic titles and repertoire new to Ireland. Artists are a blend of international and Irish singers, both well established and emerging talents, and Opera Ireland has been credited with springboarding the careers of a number of Artists - most famously the young Luciano Pavarotti who was spotted by Covent Garden singing in Dublin in 1963. Since 2009 Opera Ireland has been engaged with Government and with Opera Theatre a Company (Irelands premier touring opera company) in a process to establish the first National Opera Company for Ireland - a historic moment for Opera In Ireland. As a part of this process, in preparation for the formation of Irish National Opera in 2011, the final Opera Ireland production will be given in November 2010 - Puccini's Tosca featuring Orla Boylan and Cara O'Sullivan featuring in the title role. |
